Operations Support Manager

Job Description Summary

Regional position that directs automation, instrumentation, and reliability engineering team to meet short and long-range objectives with optimum efficiency.
Ensure that the team members are aligned and properly technically trained and that necessary tools are available.
Drive the development and implementation of a sustainable reliability centered maintenance program that includes the collection and analysis of relevant maintenance configuration/condition data to change maintenance practices that minimize in-service asset/component failures, extend equipment life and optimize maintenance costs.
Support the efficient use of the maintenance / capital budgets through the identification of plant opportunities and by enacting budget control discipline.
Support the facilities in the planning, design, procurement, installation, start-up and training for kiln capital projects.
Focus on measuring productivity improvements to attain cost optimization for reliability/automation efforts.
Develop and implement improved maintenance processes aimed at optimizing the overall productivity of the facilities.
Track Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) to measure automation/reliability, up and down time of critical maintenance.
Drive culture of change from reactive to pro-active in the approach to asset management and reliability/automation.
Lead Lean initiatives at the locations.
Support Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) initiatives and awareness programs.
Responsibilities, Skills & Experience RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Reliability and availability of plant assets and equipment
  • Review and drive the updating of the Preventative Maintenance programs at the locations.
  • Establish and monitor programs for critical equipment analysis and condition monitoring techniques.
  • Create efficient spare parts inventory with a focus on development of critical spare parts inventory.
  • Develop reliability program including predictive maintenance and lubrication programs.
  • Regularly advise maintenance / production / plant management of the health of their maintenance program.
  • Lead the Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) program to include the identification and resolution of equipment failures.
  • Assists the location's leadership in the direction and prioritization of needed capital projects and expenses
  • Allocate resources appropriately in the face of competing demands
  • Ensure that equipment is properly designed, selected and installed based on life-cycle philosophy.
    • Promote equipment standardization.
    • Develop standards and specifications for major maintenance overhauls.
    • Perform analysis of critical equipment failures and determine root cause.
    • Assure spare parts inventory needs of all new equipment.
    • Provide technical guidance for the CMMS (SAP).
    • Serve as the focal point for monitoring performance indicators for maintenance management.
    • Implement requirements for reliability program and ensure it is aligned with overall Operations goals
    • Champion of the Maintenance Excellence Process/Reliability Program

Lead Continuous Improvement
  • Improve the efficient operation of operations through the implementation of a robust plant instrumentation program.
  • Assure that plant instrumentation has high reliability and is quickly repaired after downtime.
  • Prioritize location automation support to balance the overall regional automation improvement needs.
  • Assure that the automation and instrumentation support functions are properly staffed and robust.
  • Track operational KPI's and provide Develop strategies to improve overall reliability and safety of plant, personnel and production processes.
  • Identify, collect, analyze, and manage various types of data to minimize failures and improve performance, and use failure analysis, RCFA, and/or other types of root cause analysis in support of reliability.
  • Lead the implementation of the Lean program and tools.
  • Drive the development of a continuous improvement culture through the use of Kaizen events and yellow belt training.

Leadership and Development of Regional Engineering Support Team
  • Provide structure, direction and feedback to regional operations support team
  • Readily share information and develop the regional operations support team by delegating to their strengths
  • Set clear guidelines and expectations for the regional operations support team
  • Establish and communicate clear roles and job performance expectations
  • Identify needs and organize technical training for the regional operations support team.
  • Lead by example: show high level of professionalism and work ethic.
  • Promote culture of continuous improvement
Environmental, Health and Safety
  • Lead by example and demonstrate EH&S leadership
  • Ensures compliance of regional operations support team with all EH&S standards, programs and requirements
  • Monitors work place to ensure a safe and healthy environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ATTRIBUTES:
  • Excellent understanding of safety and environmental procedures is required along with the desire to ensure all procedures are followed
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team in support of multiple initiatives
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/projects and meet all required deadlines
  • Prior experience in heavy industry with large rotating equipment is desired
  • Prior experience in shipping and lime processes is desired
  • Proven track record of increasing responsibility and results is required
  • Training and experience leading Lean and/or Six Sigma in solving difficult problems is a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate on all levels
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Strong sense of urgency in meeting customer needs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations and their impact on operations compliance desired
  • Must have strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint software. Previous SAP knowledge is a plus.
  • Up to 25% travel will be required.

Physical Demands include, but are not limited to:
  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
  • Tolerate working outside in severe weather conditions as well as exposure to industrial high temperature, noise and dust.
  • Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 200 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working in an office environment, mining, and mineral processing environment.
  • The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Metallic Particles.
  • The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Required Experience:
  • Must have at least five to seven years previous leadership experience in a fast-paced heavy manufacturing, construction, and/or mining environment.
  • Previous mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, automation/reliability, and/or maintenance experience.
  • Development and implementation of reliability system and programs.
  • Previous experience developing or implementing a maintenance system/program and preventive maintenance program.
  • 2-3 years of Project Management experience within an industrial environment.
  • Lean system and tools implementation experience.

Required Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or related technical field or demonstrated skills and ability and/or equivalent work experience in the field required
  • BS Degree in Engineering or a relevant / related field; with strong electrical, PLC control, and Mechanical Maintenance, automation, reliability background preferred
  • Master's degree preferred
